Your Colours make up

Your Colours make up

Why your colours make up matters

Your Colours make up

Are you happy with your makeup?

Do you think a little tweek here and there would help?

Have you been wearing the same make up for decades and feel a little tired and jaded?

So many women are confused, depressed and lacking confidence when it comes to applying make up.

But are there a few beauty hacks that can change all that?

Well yes there are and like every new skill just learning the main things can be a real game changer and something that can help your make up confidence soar.

The main thing about make up

Natural make up

Of course there are lots of little tips and tricks to make up, but if I was to name just a couple of things that would make your make up better the number one tip I would give is wear the right colours for your underskin tone.

Now you may have heard about wearing your colours or "getting your colours done" but how does that affect your make up?

Wearing the right colour make up is definetely a real key to looking your best.

Make up needs to "blend" into your natural colour skin tone, not sit on the top.

That's why a professional colour analysis really helps.

I would say that even if you are not great at application just wearing your colours make up makes the world of difference.

Conversely you may be a brilliant make up artist, but the wrong colours can spoil the whole look.

The wrong colour make up

bad make up Wrong make up colours

The wrong make up colours can make your skin look pallid

The wrong make up colours can be too bright or garrish

The wrong make up colours can make you look dull and aged

The wrong make up colours can make you look less attractive.

The wrong make up colours can change the shape of your features

The wrong make up colours can diminish your eyes

The wrong make up colours can make your lips look strange

The wrong make up colours can make you look strange

The wrong make up colours can make you look a fright

The wrong make up colours can make you look a different colour

These are just a few reasons why you don't want to wear the wrong make up colours and finding the right colours for your underskin tone is a good goal to have.

7 steps to transformation-Step 7 Dress your shape

7 steps to transformation-Step 7 Dress your shape

How to dress your shape

Dress your shape

Our final step to your top to toe transformation is a 3 part step 7-Dress your age, dress your shape and dress your personality.

Part 2 of step 7 is -dress your shape.

Remember this all comes after you have determined your colours.

Colours is the basis to your image success.

Once you've understood your colours, all the rest will fall into place.

A simple way to dress your shape

dress your shape

Dressing your shape can be a complex equation of figures, dimensions and lengths, but there is a simple way for you to see what shapes, styles and designs best suit you.

I try to make this step as simple as possible for my clients, and learning to use our eye, is a great way to discover design.

One good way is to imagine yourself as a rectangle.

Some of course will be more rectangle than others depending on height and thinness.

A rectangular shape that's 6 feet tall and a size 8 will look different to a rectangle that's 5 feet tall and a size 16.

Look at yourself in the mirror and think about balance. How can you make that rectangle more balanced, considering shoulder and hip width?

You can make your rectangle more elongated by adding heels for example and slimming down the pant width?

Or maybe having mono colours and no patterns, if you are aiming to look taller, will give you a better shape.

There are lots of little tricks to get that balance right.

What shape are you?-straight or curvy?

What is your body shape? What body shape are you?

To make life simple, I like to put women into only one of 2 categories for shape.

Of course there are many more, but as a personal stylist, I find this is simple way of dressing and it works every time.

You are either a straight shape or a curvy shape.

The straight shape is determined by a thicker waist. You may have a small or large bust. You may have a flat tummy or a fuller tummy especially as you mature. And as you mature, you may even develop a muffin top, which is very common.  In general you have smaller hips as well.

The curvy shape will always have a slimmer waist. Usually bigger hips and bigger bust size goes with the curvy look aka Kim Kardashian.

So you can imagine yourself as a rectangle with a tie around the middle to pull it in like a bow.

How to dress the 2 shapes

The curvy shape

Curvy figure

The curvier figure will look fabulous in fitted waisted clothes.

You can probably go a little tighter and more fitted. You're waist is an asset and belts and tuck ins are the go.

Often the curvy shape will have small shoulders with a large bust, scooped and cut out necks, minimizes and show off that feature.

Avoid detail around the hips, like pockets and stripes and frilled tops.

Fitted knee length skirts will slim down the hip area, but don't go too tight around the hips.

Bring all the focus towards the slimmer waist or the lower cut tops. Remember less fabric and fullness "tidies" the whole look.

Jackets sit neatly just below the waist. The Chanel cut works wonders.

Each body is individual so a little trial and error always helps.

The straight shape

Straight figure

Of course the straight shape comes in all sizes. Dressing for success depends on your height and your size. A very tall slim person can wear lots of length and flow for example

A shorter straight figure should avoid garments that are too long and flowey as they will swamp you.

A general rule of thumb for most straight figures is to stick to classic shapes.

Avoid tuck ins or belts, unless you are very slim.

Fitted but not tight tops sitting around the belly button or a little below are usually a good length. Don't wear things that are too tight, but not too loose and sloppy either.Tailored and nicely fitted garments look great.

If you are a straight body shape with broad shoulders, adopt ways to minimize shoulder width, like creating V necks and have smaller jacket lapels and un padded shoulders.

These little tips are only a guide. Like I said every body is different and you will always benefit from a personal shopping trip with the help of a professional personal shopper.

7 Steps to transformation-Step No 7-How to dress your age

7 Steps to transformation-Step No 7-How to dress your age

DRESS YOUR AGE, SHAPE AND PERSONALITY

The final step of your transformation is three pronged.

It’s what creates your individualism.

It’s about dressing your age, your shape and your personality.

It's about finalizing your top to toe signature style

You’re special- ness is shown when you take all these 3 things into consideration.

PART 1 DRESS YOUR AGE.

Mature style

Every person is an individual and your own  look comes into play by following ALL of the 7 steps to transformation.

Our shape and size, colour and ethnicity, age and personality are all a part of who we are.

No two individuals are the same and who wants to be a cookie cutter image of everyone else anyway?

This is one of the reasons why I take an exception to all women wearing black from top to toe.

AVOID BLACK

woman wearing black

It’s a little difficult to be creative or look different if we are all wearing black.

OUR STYLE CHANGES AS WE MATURE

Our fashion and style needs to grow and change with us.

Have you noticed you can’t keep doing the things you’ve always done as you grow older?

WHAT NOT TO WEAR AS YOU AGE

mother and daughter

Try standing next to your 25 year old daughter wearing exactly the same outfit. Something looks a little out of place and that something is you.

Follow the mature rules and manage to look younger and more appealing that way.

I like to use the decades rule. Each decade has it’s own set of challenges and so we need to accommodate the challenges and changes and grow gracefully to have stunning style

Age is no barrier to beauty and mature style that's done well,  can always be a mark of elegance.

WHAT NEEDS TO CHANGE AS WE MATURE

mature women style

Here are a few simple style tips to think about as the decades roll on, to avoid looking like “mutton dressed as lamb”

These applications will help you look your stunning best.

Though there are exceptions to every rule, these are some general no no’s for maturing women.

Remember most of us don’t look like the celebrities, so best not to follow their lead. The images we often see of famous people are often photo-shopped and they spend hundreds and thousands of dollars to defy the years. These images are not reality for most women.

I think some women believe if they dress like their daughters they’ll look years younger, but the opposite is mostly true.

With all that in mind here are my 20 top things mature women should avoid to look more youthful and beautiful

WHAT NOT TO WEAR AS YOU MATURE

what not to wearwhat not to wearwhat not to wear

  1. Cover loose arms
  2. Cover large legs
  3. Lower hems
  4. Raise necklines
  5. Avoid a very dark tan
  6. Avoid bling
  7. Lower heels
  8. Shorten boots
  9. Avoid shimmers and shines
  10. Avoid tight clothes
  11. Shorten very long nails
  12. Shorten long hair
  13. Avoid lots of detail
  14. Avoid buckles and bows
  15. Avoid very heavy make up
  16. Avoid false everything,( it only looks false)
  17. Avoid backless
  18. Avoid strapless

What is a Colour Analysis?

What is a Colour Analysis?

Colour analysis for your Personal style

Have you ever had your colours done?

Are you aware of the benefits to your look by wearing your colours?

If you're a young woman or a mature woman, wearing the right colours is really a style game changer.

(Young woman before and after wearing her colours)

What Colours suit me

Certainly if you are a mature woman, wearing the right colours is so important.More so than when you are young.

If you notice yourself, often looking a little dull and drab , it will most likely be because you're not wearing colours that suit you.

(Even celebrities can improve on their colours)

An example of her wearing the right colours. To maintain a youthful look, she should refer to the colour palette on the right.

Before and after transformations

Women in the right Colours

A professional colour analysis, will help you find ALL the right Colours in your Seasonal Colour Palette.

Women in the right colours Colour swatches and drapes

It's all about the underskin tone

Colours really change the way you look.

To show the client  the right colours that suit them, the stylist will have a serious of cool, warm, dominant and muted coloured drapes.

The draping kit will have a variety of shades to demonstrate  just how much the skin colour is affected by placing swatches against the skin.

It's up to the colour consultant to reveal to the client just how each colour affects the way they look

At first glance the coral swatch may appear suitable but the clarity of the skin, eyes, hair and lips is muddied on the left.

The wrong colours are less noticeable on younger skin, as a younger woman has less things she wants to conceal.

The pink swatch shows how flattering the cooler shades are on this model.

(Note how the Coral colour adds an orangey warm tone?)

Once the cool tones are deemed best on this client, the colour consultant goes on to reveal how the cool tones are a better fit.

The cool shades are made up of 2 palettes, one cool dominant and the other cool muted.

(It's obvious just how much younger, slimmer and more attractive this mature woman appears when she wears the right colours, on the right)

The process of a colour analysis

Since the 60's Colours has gone through major changes.

Originally Colour me Beautiful and other Colour Companies and Franchaise had just 4 seasonal palettes. Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.

From there many Colour systems emerged, making way for many different interpretations and mass confusion.

The 4 Colours system is and was accurate, but many untrained and unskilled analysts misdiagnosed clients, hence many confusing systems appeared.

The analysis is only as good as the consultant interpreting the colours and their clients colours.

Step by step Colour analysis

The client needs to be firstly draped with one cool and one warm pink tone.

Then one of each of the groups of seasonal colours.

The analysis will reveal that all the colours from the one palette will suit that client.

From that one palette, the analyst can then show the client the thousands of colour choices that fit within that colour palette

Why are the 4 seasonal palettes so accurate?

Drapes for seasonal colours

There are an infinite number of colours

When you think of it, every colour on the planet can fit into one of 4 categories.

They are either Cool Dominant, Cool Muted, Warm Brights or Warm Deep Colours.

So when the colour consultant does your analysis, they need to find the right palette that "blends" with your underskin tone.

They also need to have a good knowledge about how to slot the 2.5 million plus colours into the right category.

There are so many different seasonal colour swatches on the market, and many have combinations of all the colour categories in the one seasonal palette.

Women are confused and go back to wearing any old colour.

I have seen so many women like this, which is a real shame and they never experience the beauty of colour

Your Colours and your style

How do your colours affect your style? Colour is key to your image success. In fact I would have to say, as an image consultant colour contributes to as much as 80% to your total look. Sadly most women are not realising their full image and style potential simply because they are unaware of the multiplicity of gorgeous and stunning colours that will bring them to life. As a mature colour consultant my passion is for women to look their best all the time in their colours.

YOUR SHOPPING EXPERIENCE

online shoppingpersonal shopper

When was the last time you went shopping? In store or online. How did you go?

Are you one of those frustrated shoppers that come home empty, or worse still return with a bunch of clothes you never wear?

No wonder you hate shopping. No one loves doing something they ‘re not good at.

The good news is you can be a saavy and stylish shopper. So here are a few simple tips to guide you to success. Read the blog to the end to grab a few DIY steps to your style success.

WHY YOUR COLOURS?

Colour analysis

Personal stylists with a very good understanding of colour theory will help you to shop for success.

Colour advice is first and foremost to good fashion choices.

Colours are the key to your Image success. You can roam around the shops aimlessly for hours if you have no idea of the colours that suit you. Or you can grab lots of interesting and lovely items and bargains as well.

Successful shopping trip

How would you feel if after 3 hours of shopping you could find 30 items you love?

It’s all about colour.

COLOURS EXPAND YOUR CHOICES.

Choosing the right colours

There’s a misunderstanding that shopping for your colours only limits your shopping choices.

Actually the opposite is true.

Whilst those that don’t know their colours , search for anything in any colour, a colour specialist can guide you to all your colour choices.

That way you can eliminate all the bad choices and only go for the right choices.  This makes shopping, targeted, fun and exhilarating.

You will be more qualified once you know your colours.

AN ACCURATE COLOUR ANALYSIS

Colour me beautiful colour analysis

Exploring the world of colour is a wonderful experience. With over 16million colours available you can see how colours and colour theory can be a little confusing.

It’s important to have an accurate analysis as there are countless colour systems on the market.

Your colours and style comes with 15 years colour experience and many thousands of testimonials to the advantages of knowing your colours.

THE IMPORTANCE OF COLOUR AS WE AGE.

Mutton dressed up as lamb

We’ve all heard the expression “mutton dressed up as lamb”

Wearing the wrong colours gives this result. Younger women don’t look as bad in the wrong colours as more mature women do.

The wrong colours are very aging for a number of reasons.

Some colours are too bright or too dull or just too powerful. In this case a less than attractive look is achieved. The wrong colours make us look bigger and frumpier also.

HOW TO KNOW YOUR COLOURS.

Have your colours done

My personal advice as a colour consultant is to make having a colour analysis your first style choice.

So many women tell this changes everything and they wished they’d done it a long time ago.

It’s not easy to see for yourself what does and doesn’t suit you.

It’s a 15 minute experience that changes everything.

You can also do this online in the comfort of your own home and gain professional help with your style after that.

DIY TIPS FOR YOUR COLOURS

COLOUR ANALYSISProfessional colour analysisPersonal colour analysisPersonal colour analysis

If you haven’t had this experience of having your colours done as yet, here are a few little tips to help yourself.

Take a few pictures of yourself wearing colour.

Ask yourself the following questions

Do I look bigger in that colour?

Does that colour reflect on my face?

What colour is reflecting on my face?

Do I appear to have more pigmentation in this colour?

Do my eyes look brighter in this colour?

Does my hair shine?

Are my teeth white or yellow?

Does this colour make me look red?

Does this colour cast shadow and give me more lines?

Do I look yellow in that colour?

Is the colour too bright?

Is the colour too strong?

Is the colour dull on me?

These are the things a professional colour stylist will look at to guide you to your perfect colour choices

Less is more

Most people wear 20% or their wardrobe 80% of the time.

If lockdown's taught us anything, we've learned that we just don't need all the stuff in our closets.

Perhaps it's time for less is more. Or quality over quantity? It might be time to support local designers and manufacturers and buy Australian even if the price tag is a little bigger than all the throw away items we've purchased on a whim.

Surely all that culling and cleaning in the past few months, has started us  thinking. How can we do this better? So from a colour consultant's perspective how will you cull your wardrobe successfully, have a functional and beautiful  wardrobe and dress for success every time not just once in a while?

Don't throw away things you can use.

Wardrobe cull

This sounds pretty obvious but how will you know what suits you and looks best on you or what is actually functional if you have never had a proper colour and style analysis?

What will you remove from your already cluttered space?

As a colour analyst, I have studied colours for 14 years to give my clients clear guidance on what colours are best for them and how to choose the thousands of colours that belong in their wardrobe.

Because there are over 16 million colours, you cannot be expected to know which ones suit you best without this guidance.

Cull with your seasonal colour palette.

have your colours done

Once you have had your colours done, use your colour palette to work out which colours have no business taking up space in your more functional wardrobe.

If your wardobe is cluttered with the wrong colours, it makes it more difficult to work out what looks best on you.

You cannot mix certain colours together. Colours from your palette are always your best option and will always create the best stylish outfits.

Remove all the old pieces as well as the ones that don't fit or are in the wrong style.

Keep to the less is more principle to be able to part with clothes you've kept for years and not worn away.

You will learn about your style and what suits your body shape over time and these are what you want as staples. The style principles come very easily when you work on your colours first.

A list of your key pieces and colours

7 Steps to Image Success-Lesson 2-Cull your wardrobe

Cull your wardrobe using your swatch

Seasonal colour swatch

To achieve Image Success it's important to follow certain steps.

In Step 1 in the last blog, I discussed having an accurate colour analysis.

This is the Key that unlocks your true Image potential and shows you how to wear colours that flatter who you are.

Once you have had your colours done, you will receive a seasonal Colour swatch.

Follow this link to see the colour swatches available.

Only 4 seasonal colour palettes

I personally only endorse the 4 seasonal colours, as every known colour can be allocated into only 4 groups

So many are confused with the plethora of colour systems and swatches

Incorrect colour swatches

Note the swatch below called Dark Autumn actually has colours from every season.

Wrong colours in seasonal colour swatches

If you're not sure about your colours feel free to contact Your Colours and Style for an accurate colour analysis and swatch.

Your colours are endless

Your swatch is an excellent tool to determine the many fabulous colours that suit you. With over 16 million colours, you will find that an huge number of those colours belong in your palette.

Even though the palette has only 32 colours, learning to work your colour palette is a must, as it reveals the diversity of colours available to you.

If you're not sure of your "colour rules" please contact me and I will email them to you.

You look best in your colours

Wearing all your colours is so liberating to your Image. You will loo younger, slimmer, more attractive and more stylish.

As a colour consultant my goal is to teach my clients how to do that well. When I say ALL your colours, there are literally thousands of choices.

In the last blog I outlined how to find all your colour choices by using your swatch correctly.

Personal style

Remove all the wrong colours from your wardrobe

The wrong colours

Have you noticed a mixture of colours in your wardrobe that do not go together or "flow"?

Mixing everything with black for example is a real no no.

Not everything goes with black. In this image you have a warm teal colour from the Autumn Palette and a black from the Winter Palette. This is the best way to look drab and dull.

This is a real image breaker. It's best to coordinate only from your colour palette.

So the first thing is to remove all the items in your wardrobe that are not in your palette.

This may be brutal as you grieve over the things that hold sentimental and monetary value.

If this is too difficult, I always suggest placing them in another room until you grow with your new colours and the "new you"

Interestingly enough, the new you may take a little while to get used to as you are familiar with your old look.

Old being the operative word, because you will look older in the wrong colours.

Holding on to items that are not in the right colours' sets you up to fail.

Your capsule wardrobe should "flow"

How do you build a great capsule wardrobe?

By using only the right colours.

Once you place the right colours in your wardrobe everything with go together and everything will look fabulous on you.

You'll look great from top to toe.

mature style

Start building with your basics.

So many stylists tell their clients their basics are black and white and so they build a wardrobe around the dominant cool colours that only go with black.

You're basics are the classics in your neutral colours first, and then items in your fashion colours.

Jeansfashion mature womenmature fashion

Choose the neutral shades in your swatch and begin building with those.

Just that one pair of jeans in your colours will go with every shirt, every jumper and every jacket.

This is how you are going to have so many outfits with so few garments.

Of course you can then grab one or 2 pairs of shoes and even 1 bag in any of your colours and you'll be surprised at how many outfits one thing can go with.

Maroon bag
I hope you're finding these tips helpful. Just go with your swatch and cull your wardrobe and I'll see you with the Lesson 3 of 7 steps to your Image transformation.

Please contact Your Colours and style if you find you need help with any of these steps.

7 Image Transforming steps

Seasonal colour swatches

Step 1-How to use your seasonal colour swatch

Congratulations on taking the 1st step towards your best image.

Colour is the key to your image success and identifying your colours is the best place to start for transformation.

Colour is more complex than people imagine simply because there are over 16 million of them. In fact the number is probably an infinite number.

Also hundreds of confusing colour systems have emerged that are just misleading and incorrect.

Most people in the world wear the wrong colours.

Most people in the world wear the wrong colours most of the time because they don’t know their colours.

Many people default to black for this reason, or just wear the wrong colours, which is sad because finding the right colours can change the way you look completely.

Thank you for choosing your colours and style colour analysis.

I take the responsibility of giving you the right colours seriously.

This accurate colour system was birthed out of 10 years of research, to make colours simple and easy to follow for everyone.

This system works for all.

If you're a mature woman, wearing the right colours is more important, than when you were younger because the aging process accentuates all your flaws.

If you notice yourself, often looking a little dull and drab, you may just be wearing the wrong colours.

Even celebrities can improve on their colours

An example of her wearing the right colours is on the right.

To maintain a youthful look, she should continue to wear the colours in the  image on the right.

At first glance this coral swatch may appear suitable but the clarity of the skin, eyes, hair and lips is muddied on the left.

As mentioned the wrong colours are less noticeable on younger women.

The pink swatch shows how flattering the cooler shades are on this model.

(Note how the Coral colour adds an orangey warm tone?)

The next steps are to drape the client with one of each season in red, blue, green, yellow blue and white drapes.

The client will see how the different tones change the way she looks.

She will notice the wrong colours make her look older, duller, and less attractive.

The wrong colours highlight dark shadows, wrinkles, lines, pigmentation and redness. The right colours give clarity, brightness, freshness and youthfulness.

The process of a colour analysis

Since the 60's Colours has gone through major changes.

Originally Colour me Beautiful and other Colour Companies and Franchaise had just 4 seasonal palettes. Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.

From there many Colour systems emerged, making way for many different interpretations as well as mass confusion.

The 4 Colours system is and was accurate, but many untrained and unskilled analysts misdiagnosed clients, hence many more confusing systems appeared, deeming the original system, not enough.

The analysis is only as good as their interpretation of the process.

Why are the 4 seasonal palettes so accurate?

Drapes for seasonal colours

There are an infinite number of colours. At least 2.5million

When you think of it, every colour on the planet can fit into one of 4 categories.

The categories are Cool Dominant, Cool Muted, Warm Brights or Warm Deep Colours.

So women are confused and go back to wearing any old colour or lots of black

I have seen so many women like this, which is a real shame as they never experience the beauty of colour
